Lessons
All lessons are provided by Harrison Whelan. If you’re interested in lessons, please get in touch.
I offer flute lessons for beginner to intermediate players, covering a wide range of styles. Whether you’re looking to play just for fun — learning themes, pop music, or favourite tunes — or you’re keen to focus more seriously on classical repertoire, lessons can be tailored to suit your goals and interests.
Lessons are available at my home/workshop or I am happy to visit your home at additional cost, see below. Parents of flautists are welcome to sit in on any or all lessons. I have a current working with children card.
Due to my performance and study commitments, lessons during university semesters are generally available Friday to Sunday. During university breaks, lessons can often be scheduled on most days. There may also be occasional times when lessons cannot occur, but notice will always be given well in advance.
My approach to teaching focuses on building a strong technical foundation while keeping the flute an enjoyable and rewarding experience. Not everyone wants — or needs — to study at a conservatorium, and lessons are structured to support each student’s individual pace, interests, and motivations.
The first lesson is free, as it’s usually spent getting to know the student, assessing their current level, and deciding how lessons will be structured going forward. As a result, this session is more introductory than instructional.
After the first lesson, pricing is as follows:
• $50 per lesson (1 hour)
• + $35 per hour of travel time, if applicable*
*Travel time is calculated as the round-trip driving time to your location, rounded to the nearest $5. This amount is then added as a fixed fee for future lessons.
My philosophy is to openly discuss progress and provide guidance on the benefits of more specialised tuition if and when appropriate.
If you have any questions please reach out. I’m always happy to have a friendly chat to help you on your journey with the flute.
